Dance and Physical theatre with Jo Monday 1st and 8th October

In these sessions we looked at running a town called malice, and our physical theatre pieces. In a town called malice I enjoy the section along the back wall as it is a really nice cannon and really adds to the character of the piece. I still am struggling with the section after the second diagonal line as I am still messing up my footwork. I need to make sure that that section is set in stone and I am comfortable doing it, I will do this by running that section in front of the mirror and asking my friends or Jo if she can go over it with me at some point. I will aim to have it down by the end of November as I feel this is more than achievable.

After watching DV8’s ‘the cost of living’ we were given the challenge in small groups to re-create a piece from the film and add our own twist to it. My group was made up of me Danilo and Jasmine, we decided to do the ‘do you believe in life after love’ the reason for this is that we found it humorous because of the use of facial expressions and contrast in his character

In the piece we are doing however we have added our own narrative, at first it is me and Jasmine doing the same and then I start to enjoy myself more and more until I move around the space having a great time, however as I move back I reveal Dan and him and Jasmine do the dance but begin to do it together and begin to leave; In this case she is supposed to me my girlfriend so I then panic as I cannot find her and I run off,  they then come back on and change to a different dance, I finally come back on and I’m completely broken inside, I lose all enjoyment and get upset. We have tried to look at the timing with the music to make sure things fit, and I do this as the point where I come back on is a slower piece of the track and fits with/ reflects my emotion. To improve I am going to increase my energy when I am enjoying myself, I will do this by improving my endurance this will mean working hard in body conditioning and thinking about being a healthy performer, I aim to look at being as energetic as possible by the Christmas Variety show.

Acting with Shanaz Monday 1st and 8th of October

In these two sessions we where looking at characterisation, the aim of these sessions where to put animal characteristics into a human character without being overly cheesy.

My animal was a horse. In preparation for these sessions I watched numerous videos of horses in shows, in fields and on farms to see the different ways in which horses move.

This allowed me to pick up characteristics of how a horse interacts with other animals and emotions. My interpretation of a ‘human horse’ was a show horse that was heavily groomed and believed it was the best, it was very elegant.

I found it hard to show that I’m a horse like person as there are many different horses so it was difficult to chose characteristics.

Wednesday at one review with course staff 26th September

Today was all about sharing the different pieces we had so far whether they were finished or not, it was a chance to show things off as a work in progress.

Levels 2 and three first and second years met in the theatre to watch each others work; Work varied from dance to acting to singing and in some cases all three. We were given feedback about each performance and how we can improve them.

We started with Dancin’ fool, this piece is probably our best as we have been working on it for the full time we have been on the course, this was reflected in the feedback that it was ‘very polished’, the next piece I did was a town called mallace, this was good as we have not had as much time to work on this and this was shown in the feedback we received ‘Some bits were cleaner than others’ this is just showing us that there are parts we need to work on, I know that I really need to work on the heel digs as I’m still not getting it.

We then went onto the fairytales which sadly my group could not perform due to and absence in the group and very little time to amend the gap.

Presentations with Karma 25th September

This was all about presenting our research to our performer as storyteller assignment, my research was not the best as it was from blogs and forums instead of articles and books however it was still an attempt. I feel my presentation went well and that I demonstrated I have some ability to research however I know my research needs to be more in depth and I need to reference all sources.

Dance with Jo 25th September

Today we looked at practising the prop piece to music and working on the timing to which each group would enter. This went well as groups found que words in the song to let them know when to do certain parts of their piece so this helped keep the piece within the timing. we also did some work on a town called mallace. To improve I can practice a town called mallace at home.

The Cause Review

On Wednesday 19th September 2018 I was lucky enough to see a production called ‘The Cause’, a production by Dreadnought southwest, it was written by Natalie McGrath and directed by Josie Sutcliffe. The play features three characters only, Millicent Fawcett played by Ruth Mitchell, Emmeline Pankhurst played by Michelle Ridings and The Trumpet played by Remi Oriogun-Williams.

The play is set in 1913 and is an imagined meeting between the two great leaders of the suffragists and suffragette movement, one by means of peaceful protest and the other by bombs and hunger strikes. The meeting takes place in Millicent’s Orchard at a time in 1913 where Emmeline has been imprisoned and on hunger strike but has been let out to prevent her becoming a martyr, and she is now on the run. This was as part of the cat and mouse act and the Temporary Discharge for ill-health act. It looks at the two enemies reflecting on their childhood when they used to be friends and looks at the effect of the tragic death of Emily Wilding-Davison at the royal derby day when attempting to tie the cause’s colour to the king’s horse, in the process she was stampeded, and this resulted in her death; This affected both sides of the suffrage movement. The end of the play is the two leaders agreeing on one thing and sharing an experience before exiting the stage.

Now that I have covered the outline of the play onto my review…

Although ‘The Cause’ is not something that I would go and see just out of the blue for fun I did enjoy the overall experience, I was lucky enough to get to see it twice as I was helping as front of house on their public evening performance, I enjoyed the evening performance more as it seemed to be more relaxed however more intense. Something we learned when speaking to the cast is that they gage the audience to gage their own performance, so they tailor the show to fit with the showing, this is clear throughout the performance as there is a lot of audience interaction through the form of ‘The Trumpet’.

When looking at Trumpet there is a lot more there than you may think as she is based off the foundation of theatre in the way that she is a representation of Greek chorus this is shown in the way she seems to narrate the action and is able to jump in and out of the audience, she is also supposed to be a bright happy character this is demonstrated in her costume as it is full of colour and life, unlike the two other character who wear full white or black.

I did enjoy the simplistic set and the use of media to enhance it, the set was made up of white tiles on the floor and a white bench with a white sheet of fabric at the back, this could be taken to show purity or maybe just to help you focus on the actors. Throughout there were multiple media assists, these were in the forms of projections, audio and lighting. The projection accompanied the dialogue and at one point they were speaking of fallen women and there was an animation this I felt was very effective.

To conclude ‘The Cause’ is a different and intriguing piece of theatre that even though it is not my normal cup of tea was enjoyable and well worth the time; However there were some points that were not very clear especially when speaking of Emily Wilding-Davison, the way it came across from their side was that she deliberately killed herself to prove a point, however as I have already mentioned it was an accident, other than that though it was a mind opening production.

Body conditioning with Karma 25th September

In today’s session we looked at doing some push ups, some lunges, some stretches and a bit of yoga, this is because as a performer it is important to keep fit and healthy and to be able to carry out the stuff that is required of you when in shows. To improve in this aspect I can start to go to the gym to get my fitness up more.

Acting with Shanaz 24th September

In today’s session we continued with our fairy tale pieces and we did this by bringing it to life. we got about two minute of drama done but ran out of time.  to improve I can work on my own character of prince charming who is actually like a bit gangster in our version of Rapunzel, and the father role is based loosely of James cordon in into the woods.

Dance with Jo 24th September

Today’s session was about us working on our prop pieces and the ‘a town called mallace piece’ this was to help get it ready for Wednesday at 1. In the prop piece me and Holly worked on our characterisation and timing to ensure the story gets across to our target audience. In ‘a town called mallace’ we also worked on our characterisation and polishing the piece to make it clean and effective. To improve I need to work on and practice the heel digs in a town called mallace.
